My gorgeous daughter is 9..

She was born on a Tuesday at about half past one in the afternoon. The first thing she did as she was handed to FR in a cute little bundle, was to reach up, pull off his glasses and fling them across the room. She had no name until late that evening, when I called home and said to FR, what about Romy? We had to call her something and nothing else seemed right. She could be nothing else now and I love her and her name.

It was one of the very happiest days of my life and gave me my most treasured memory - the moment when Mateo and Ruy came running into the hospital ward to see me and their new sister. It was so joyful it brought tears to everyone's eyes and still does to mine now.

So this weekend, all weekend, we're celebrating the occasion of Romy's ninth birthday.

Starting on Friday evening, she had a small party for some of her school friends at one of the local 'party' centres.

Must be so nice to have a big brother.

For once he looks pleased to have a little sister too!

Games, sandwiches, cake and supervision for two hours.

A good time was had by all.

On Saturday, we went out into town for two birthday gifts - one that was going to be a little uncomfortable, however much desired - pierced ears! So we did that one first and Marguerita at the chemist was lovely and did a quick and relatively painless puncture of each ear.

Then we met Mateo and Ruy at the pet shop. About three months ago, our little hamster, Muffin - a birthday present from 2 years ago - went missing. It may have been a door left open or it could have been the night we were visited by a stray cat. He never came back, despite us leaving food around and the door of his cage permanently open.

In the shop, there were a couple of lovely hamsters of normal size, but when we saw these dwarf ones, well, we had to have two! They don't get any bigger and were just too cute.

This morning, the actual birthday, Ruy and Ruy were preparing a racecourse for them but they kept escaping and causing no end of panic as we rushed to capture them before they disappeared under one of the sofas.

She got some lovely presents and was very happy.

And here is cake number two, resplendent with nine candles.

"Don't blow out my candles..."

Making a wish.....
My candle-lit daughter. Happy Birthday Romy!
Cake number three will be taken to school tomorrow to share with all her classmates. A lovely birthday weekend. Happy Birthday, Romy.

    1. Thank you Perpetua. Sorry it's so wet where you are but hopefully an improvement on the snow. Romy's birthday has brought some warmer, drier weather with it, thank goodness and we're hoping for even more sunshine this week. The hamsters are absolutely adorable!

    1. Many thanks, Diane. I'm very pleased with some of these photos - usually, she's pulling silly faces but she obviously felt at 9, she had to be a little more grown up. Axxx

  6. Happy Birthday, Romy.

My daughter (27 last week) maintains that having a birthday means that you are a princess for the day. Romy already has the crown/tiara. It looks like a splendid birthday weekend and a time to remember those precious moments in life.

    1. Many thanks, Gaynor. Romy has a 'princess' attitude for more than the one day a year....precious she is but not precocious thank goodness. She's a comic and a sweetie and deserves her 'special' time. Axxx

  7. Lucky you to have a lovely daughter! I have four boys and cannot imagine it any other way, though I longed for a girl. Now I have two gorgeous grandaughters which is fantastic, but, I have to admit, girls are a bit harder for me to understand after about 27 years of living only with males, until the first was born. (Their girlfriends don't count - they're just like my friends.)

    1. Very interesting you say this, Nilly - I was just fine with my two boys - then Romy came along and I was quite scared to have a girl. I shouldn't have been, she's such a good friend and we are very close in a different way to the boys. I sometimes understand her a bit too well, which may cause us to have a few disagreements as she gets older....but I am so chuffed to have her. Congratulations on four boys though - that's an achievement all of its own. Axxx

  10. Happy Birthday Romy! Looks like you had a fabulous day, x 3 :)

(Watch out for those dwarf hamsters Annie, they move like lightning and can get into the tiniest spaces, our lot had one each years ago and were forever losing them behind furniture ... the day we had to disconnect the cooker to rescue one kinda' stands out! They really are great fun though :D )

    1. Hi Annie - thank you and thanks for the warning. I have been kind of strict about getting them out of the cage for exactly this reason. They're certainly fast!! 'Fortunately' one is a bit of a biter, so the desire to hold them has decreased with each little nibble...They are great fun to watch though as they love their wheel - which the last one never really worked out - and are in and out of their house, climbing the bars and being very cute.

    1. It was, Fly - thank you very much. She did go to bed with a tummy ache on Sunday night and so learnt a valuable lesson about over-indulging in sweets and cake! However, all was well this morning and she went off to show her ears to her classmates with great glee. How lovely to be 9! Axxx

  12. I've been out of circulation for a few days.... but back in the land of the living again... so sorry this comment is so late ! Romy is completely gorgeous....that photo of her in her crown is very very beautiful....and her expression is priceless...contentment, confidence, a little bit of mystery, and I am my mother's daughter....all wrapped up, and crowned perfectly. 1. I do hope you're feeling a bit better again, Janice. It's lovely to hear from you sounding so 'you'! I'm quietly marking dates on my calendar that are possibles....though I know you will need to get back into the swing in Caunes again as soon as you are able. I don't think it will matter where we go - after seeing your gorgeous boots, I was thinking a visit to Hebden Bridge would do me!!
Take care and hope you continue to feel well inbetween sessions until they're all over and done with.
It is a lovely photo, isn't it? I'm so pleased with it. Axxx
