Darling Darwin...gone forever

As I was posting my last, mellow Christmas post, my poor darling Darwin was dying. It is absolutely devastating, not just for myself but for the children, who are heartbroken.
He slipped out of the gate just before we had lunch, something he's taken to doing recently. Usually, he's back within half an hour. This time, after two hours, we were concerned.

Mateo, Ruy and I went out at about 4 o'clock and wandered all over the village, expecting to catch a sight of his curly white coat. But there was nothing. I came back about an hour later, thinking he'd be waiting at the gate. Waiting for the lamb bones we'd saved him from lunchtime - but no. He wasn't.

FR and I set off in the car a bit later as Ruy hadn't come home either and I was getting worried about him - and imagining all sorts. From across the fields, we saw a neighbour signalling us and so drove over. As soon as I saw his face, I knew the worst. He said he'd found Darwin in his pool - drowned. No one has any idea how it happened. Darwin wasn't the type to jump into a pool and there is no clue as to why he went in. But that's where he was found - no marks on him; nothing to indicate anything had happened.

We found Ruy, who was fine and on his way home - fine until we told him. It's hit him very hard. It's hit all of us very hard.

We have now buried our lovely, daft, hairy, lovable friend and now we will have to wait and see how we will manage with the great hole he has left in our lives.

He belonged from the minute we saw him.

He was always there

The most sweet natured dog ever.
Always within reach

We are going to miss him so, so much.

  5. I had only just read your previous post full of the joys of Christmas and was coming back later to comment, but saw your message on Facebook and somehow I couldn't find the words for your other post. I am absolutely devastated for you because I know how you must all be feeling. Small consolation, at least you were able to bring him home to lay him to rest. My thoughts are with you all...much love xxxx

  8. I am so sorry for your loss. Dogs ask for nothing except for food and love, but give so much in return. To lose a much loved part of your family is difficult at any time, but must be particularly so at this festive time of the year.

I know that you will have many wonderful memories of him and how he brightened your daily lives. My love and thoughts are with you all. X

  11. Oh Annie - I feel for you and the family. Losing a much loved dog like Darwin is always painful - made worse by being so close to Christmas. Remember the good times with him and how much joy he brought - I'm sure he had a wonderful life in Spain with you. xHarriet

  12. So sorry for you Annie, RIP Darwin. Maybe you can do a lovely zentangle plaque or when my friend lost her dog I made her a kimikomi ornament with a photo of the dog printed on it. She now gets it our every Christmas to put on her tree and remember happy times.

  14. Annie, and all the family, my BH & I send you our love and sympathy - we cried for a fortnight when we lost our beloved Tyke a few years ago (he had a heart attack). Some dogs are really special, and your beautiful Darwin was obviously one of those, as was Tykie, and will never be forgotten. We do now have 2 lovely rescued miniature poodles making their home with us, and they have gone some way to filling the gap in our lives, but..... Consider yourselves hugged, and be somewhat comforted by the loving thoughts of your blogging and blog-reading friends.

  20. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to respond here, Annie. I was having trouble posting in between our holiday and recovery activities. I was enjoying your Christmas posting, then immediately came upon this post. How saddened I feel at your loss of Darwin. It is always sad to lose a pet, but, especially as unexpectedly as Darwin's passing during the holiday season. I'm sure you will feel him with you in so many ways as the days go on, as you will also miss him. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

    1. Thank you so much Penny, your words are very kind. It's helped having such considerate and caring comments from my blogging friends. It's almost worse now that the festivities has subsided - we were brave and enjoyed Christmas - but now we're back to normal and his absence is palpable. It will never be quite the same. Axx
