New paws

A couple of weeks ago, I got a phone call to say that a couple in the next village had found a stray dog with her four puppies - were we interested? At the time, I was still in that place where I felt I ought to be thinking about another dog but it was still too painful to action. Not the time.

But then, last week, a photograph of the puppies was posted on the window of the local British shop - and I was smitten...not spurred to action but definitely smitten. On Thursday evening, one of my students came into class all excited because her parents had just brought home a puppy and that it had come from an English woman. Later that night, I wondered whether it could possibly be from the same litter that I was interested in...and if one had gone, what if they'd ALL gone... I called them the next day. And certainly, the evening before, a Spanish couple had taken one of the dogs...I won't know until Thursday whether my student and I are now related via our puppies - because yes, we went along on Friday and picked out our new puppy!

The couple who have been looking after the puppies have done a sterling job and our little chap arrived smelling sweet, beautifully groomed, well fed and
He's currently called Pippin - we did the usual extended discussion between Friday and last night - when we picked him up - trying to decide on the right name. We had everything from Hubble, to Pancho, to Tike, to Leo, to Floyd - none of which got the majority vote. Pippin pleased most and the children have begged me not to change it again! So Pippin he is.

An absolute poppet - he seems to have settled in beautifully and is just now asleep in his temporary home - a cardboard box. I'm off to collect a crate - though where it will go, I am not sure!!

It's as if a great weight has been lifted. It was absolutely the right thing to do and the right time to do it.

Welcome Pippin - born around the time Darwin went  - we are glad there is this link.

And the header photo on my blog stays for a little longer I think.

    1. Thank you Annie - it was so lovely when the children came home from school all happy and cheerful again and excited to see Pippin and make a fuss of him. You're right, he was meant to be.
You may see more photos before much longer!

  3. I was wondering when we would get a photograph having read your comment on Ayak's blog.
He is gorgeous - and your childrens' faces say it all.

And yes, of course your header will stay...Darwin was there at the start of this adventure in your new house.

    1. We knew we were getting him on Friday but didn't have any decent photos til he actually arrived last night. He's settling in so well and is an absolute sweetie.

He's very different to Darwin, which suits us all - nothing will ever replace him - but it is so lovely to have a new puppy at home.

  4. The dogs we lose always have a special place in our hearts, and part of Darwin will always be with you all. When you are so used to having a dog (s) around the house doesn't feel like a home without them. Pippin is absolutely gorgeous and it's clear to see that the children adore him already. Lucky boy to have found you xx

    1. Absolutely, Ayak. I still remember my first dog, Bodley - I never thought there'd be another one like him - and there hasn't been. Nor will Pippin be like Darwin - he will be Pippin and he already is!
Our luck, I think, is mutual.

  7. Oh, what a sweet little thing! He's gorgeous and I can well see why the children are so smitten. Of course he can't replace Darwin, but he will follow in his pawprints rather well. :-)

    1. I have to say, Perpetua, that there will never be a cuter puppy than Darwin in my eyes but Pippin is proving to be 100 times a cleaner one! He has never been in a house but is already asking to go out when he needs to. He's a sweetie and yes, the children are totally smitten...and FR is also favourably inclined! I can see Pippin discovering that he's not the only dog who has lived here - he sits in all Darwin's favourite spots.

    1. He's fast asleep in his bed just now, cuddling a blue alien, donated by Romy after a perfect second night - no mess and asks to go out! He's definitely meant to be here!

    1. Thank you Ms S! I would say a smidge is very possible - we'll have to wait and see how he turns out. I'd be happy with German Shepherd.

  11. Pippin, the poppet - what delightful news, Annie. It seems Pippin has entered your life at just the right time and in such a storybook way. I'm smiling here - a great big grin.

    1. And the best news of all, Penny, is that the last unhomed brother has now got a family and the couple who found them all have arranged for the mother to be neutered and then she has a home to go to as well. One of the better endings, (and beginnings), I think - so you can imagine my grin too! Axxx

  12. Wonderful. Never a replacement but I'm sure Pippin will make you all smile again.

I think the name suits him. He looks like a Pippin. I wonder how long the toy will last....

    1. We all knew he wouldn't replace Darwin but agreed we needed to try and fill the hole he left - and Pippin and his brothers were in need of a home desperately. Happily, all four have found homes. He's a Pippin now cos he's little but he's growing apace already!! The toy is doing OK but he's had a go at several shoes...

    1. I haven't seen my student this week but I do hope we can compare growth and behaviour notes! He's chewing everything at the moment but that's quite normal - but he's very good really and super cute!
