Anticipation ..and frustration

...sometimes lead to an interesting combination!!

I am very excited because my mum is coming to stay this week. We've been looking forward to the event for a good month or so. I even got carried away and prepared to go and meet her a day early...silly me.

I thought I'd write a little post about anticipation and wanted to use a piece of music that sums up that wonderful, increasingly exciting feeling that is anticipation. For me, Handel's Zadok the Priest does it for me every time - it just gets that 'P' Spot.

So off I poddled to YouTube to find the best version - of the ones available, I liked the one by the Academy of Ancient Music, with Kings College Choir, conducted by Stephen Cleobury*. But I couldn't embed it. Nor the one by Yehudi Menuhin ....or for that matter anyone else at all no matter what I did. I was met by frustration after frustration as the message came up that the content belonged to EMI and could only be seen on YouTube.

So I searched more widely and was rewarded by this lovely Flashmob version that Classic FM arranged to celebrate its 20th birthday - in a supermarket. Whilst it really doesn't convey the sense of 'anticipation' that I had intended to deliver, it is quite charming and well done under the circumstances.

Hope you will bear with me on this one and see that I too have done my best under difficult circumstances!

And now I'm away to enjoy quality time with my mum - when I've worked out exactly when I need to meet her at the airport!

*You can hear this version on YouTube here

  1. I see your point about anticipation etc., but actually this little film made me weep a bit with love for human beings. And THAT'S not something that happens often. I love Flashmob.

    1. Me too, Nilly - isn't it great! It wasn't quite what I was aiming for but it gets the P spot in its own right.
      Glad it got you too!

  2. That film was amazing - I love this piece of music but found it much more moving than usual - Can't explain why at all.

    1. I'm so glad you enjoyed it - it wasn't what I had intended but I think it was a fantastic find! What gets me is when things are perfect - hence the 'P' spot, plus finding it so unexpectedly in a supermarket. Up close. Inescapable. And wonderful.

    1. Delighted you enjoyed it - my only gripe is that they cut so much out of it! I would have liked the full anthem...

And will do - she needs a break so we are aiming to spoil her.

    1. Blub, blub - I keep watching it!! My only regret is that they didn't do the whole anthem - it's been cut by about half. Off now to collect my mum...thought we'd have lunch on the beach. Life's not half bad sometimes! Much love,Axxx

  6. An old friend, homosexual, had the whole piece played at his funeral...tears turning to smiles at 'May the Queen live'....
So typical of him to allow us the emotion of that anthem and to reconcile us to losing him in recognition of his boundless and kindly sense of humour.
It could have been cheap...it wasn't.
The most joyous funeral service I have ever attended.

This clip was super...like you I'd have liked the lot, though!
Enjoy your time with your mother.

    1. Oh excellent, Fly - what a piece for a funeral and what a brilliant twist. Joyous funeral services are not the norm, are they!

I've watched the clip a few times now and it moves me every time. Planning on playing it to my mum - I know she'll love it. She here and well and just gone to bed and we're having a lovely time.

    2. You're much more the musician...but don't I remember that THE Bach either wanted or wrote a joyous funeral march?
So much more in keeping with Christian belief than the funeral march from Saul....
How I curse not having my books about me for reference!

I sm reluctantly coming to see that my mother can't make the transatlantic flight...so enjoy your mother's mobility'!

    3. Not enough of a musician (or funeral specialist) to get this reference to Bach, I'm afraid, Fly. I shall continue to search out what I can.

It's a shame that travel gets more difficult as we get older - I know even the short travel was quite a challenge and a bit tiring. However, I am so glad she's fit enough to come and visit - we're having a great time.

  7. Annie, I'm another typing this with tears in my eyes. That was truly wonderful - Zadok the Priest in a Norrison's supermarket. I absolutely love good Flashmobs - the expressions of joy and wonder on the bystanders's faces are so touching. Thank you SO much for this.

    2. Thank you Perpetua - I'm delighted I made you cry, in the nicest possible way, of course! I've played it for my mum and we both sat with much sniffing and leaky eyes and she'd never heard of Flashmobs, so we watched several more together. Good stuff. Time is whizzing past but we're having a lovely time - thank you!
